A goal that I set for myself a little while back was to see how low of a score I could get in SMB while completing the game from start to finish. I believe my record was 2800 points to finish the game. It's possible to finish every normal level exactly at the 0 second mark, only getting 100 points for the flag (2400 points throughout the game if I'm adding right). It's not all that hard to do actually, since you can jump on the little bit of space on the bottom block of the flag, wait for the timer to count down, and walk into it with a little bit of good timing skills at 0. It's also possible to beat every castle level with 0 seconds left, and since there's no flag there's no bonus for touching the ax.
I couldn't get through the game without getting 2 coins, although I believe it is possible to get through getting only 1 coin. In order to get less than 3, I think it's necessary to exploit a couple jumping glitches.
There's a couple incredibly tricky areas in the game that get really complex. In level 4-3, it's really difficult not to take a coin at the beginning, but it can be done with a fast jump, press back, and a high jump still using the momentum. than a couple other tricky maneuvers.
I can't figure out a way not to get 2 coins on a certain pit jump on level 8-1, but I did find a kind of glitch that happens very, very infrequently so that you can get just 1 coin, hit the left edge of the ground, and jump again to clear the pit. This one took dozens of tries though.
The other coin that I had to get was in the castle on 8-4, where it's basically necessary to get the hidden coin to get up to a certain pipe. I've seen a youtube video where someone used the same kind of jump glitch I already mentioned and was able to hit the pipe at a weird angle and jump off and up to the pipe without having to get the coin.
In my estimate, the minimum score for completing the whole game without warping is 2600, and 3000 seems to be the minimum without exploiting glitches. Of course it's also necessary to avoid every single enemy and power-up in the game, which seems to be a decent achievement itself. I'd be very interested to know if there's a way to complete the game without getting a single coin. In my opinion, the jumping mechanics for level 8-1 just make this impossible, but I've seen some weird glitches exploited on youtube, so I just don't know for sure.
My score of 2800 was done by using my DS and heavily relying on the rewind feature of the emulator I was using. Getting the game to glitch on command is just an attempt in futility, so I'd challenge anyone to try and beat the game straight through with a score of 3000, taking into account the 3 coins that I mentioned that I couldn't find a way around.
