I can see it as necessary in certain situations, like a dungeon being locked and thus your character has to find the key.
But I really hate it when item-finding seems contrived, and just a cheap way to consume time and artificially inflate the gameplay experience.
Two examples on the NES that I believe count for this are Milon's Secret Castle and Spelunker. Both games could actually be improved in different factors if they just streamlined their mechanics and removed much of the needless Hunt For Item X gameplay.
What's your opinion on item-finding? Any other examples?
